From the Editor

Having re-launched MSI under its new name ‘MSI Global Alliance’ in January of this year, incorporating a fresh brand image and livery, we have now taken the opportunity to update the website for our Australia and New Zealand membership group. We are very pleased to introduce this new website to you – and it can now be viewed at www.msi-anz.net. With 13 Australian and New Zealand accounting and legal firms, the group boasts an extensive range of experience and expertise. In addition, the site provides an up-to-date access point for information on doing business in New Zealand and Australia.

The new website will also over time include more and more information relevant to local and international businesses – including the information generated by our regular, quarterly business surveys.

While these surveys are intended to create a bit of a stir on some simple business issues, the most recent survey carried out in March on Work-Life Balance has some informative points for all of us who are in business and who are employers. Clearly there is a sense out in the workplace that there is less and less time for leisure, while our desks grow ever heavier under the weight of work that needs to be completed.

More and more employees are working at home in the evenings, at weekends and even on public holidays – whereas this may have been the exception 10 years ago, now it seems increasingly to be the norm.

While the skills shortage that both New Zealand and Australian businesses are suffering from must surely take much of the blame for this increased workload, no doubt it will pay us all to consider ways in which we can ease the burden on often overworked teams.

Is your blackberry a burden or an asset? Do you work more hours than you would like to? Is your partner happy with the amount of time you spend at work?  Do you spend your lunch breaks at your desk? An MSI Global Alliance survey of more than 1000 Australian and New Zealand employers and employees conducted in February 2008 provides a snapshot picture of current attitudes to these very current work-life issues.
